Basic Investigations of Child Sexual Abuse Crimes

Course Description: To improve the investigation and prosecution of sexual child abuse cases by teaching investigators investigative, medical investigative, and charging best practices that are child-sensitive, developmentally-appropriate, and legally-defensible.

Who Should Attend: This training is exclusively designed for professionals with duties that include interviewing suspected victims of child maltreatment, such as law enforcement, DCS professionals, professionals with the Office of Child Welfare Investigations, and Prosecutors.

AZPOST Certificate: 8 hours

Children’s Justice Trainings are courses designed to improve the investigations of crimes involving child maltreatment in a trauma-sensitive, developmentally appropriate way. Unless otherwise noted, Children’s Justice Trainings are exclusively for investigators of crimes involving child maltreatment, including law enforcement, DCS investigators, prosecutors, forensic interviewers, and tribal CPS investigators. Individuals who sign up for these courses and who are not investigators will be contacted and removed from the roster.

All courses are free of charge. Please note that these courses do not provide food or beverages to participants. Law enforcement participants can get AZPOST hours for Children’s Justice Trainings with approval from their home agency.

Developmental & Linguistic Considerations for Interviewing Young Children

June 21, 2023 | 9:00am – 11:00am | at the Southwest Family Advocacy Center

Course Description: This course teaches investigators interview techniques that gather the greatest amount of reliable information in a child-sensitive, developmentally-appropriate, and legally-defensible manner, specifically focusing on interviewing children under the age of six.

Who Should Attend: This training is exclusively designed for professionals with duties that include interviewing suspected victims of child maltreatment, such as law enforcement, DCS professionals, and prosecutors.

Legal Considerations in Child Abuse Forensic Interviews

Course Description: This course is designed to improve the investigation and prosecution of child abuse cases by teaching investigators/prosecutors about laws that affect evidence and testimony.

Who Should Attend: This training is exclusively designed for professionals with duties that include interviewing suspected victims of child maltreatment, such as law enforcement, DCS professionals, professionals with the Office of Child Welfare Investigations, and Prosecutors.

Interviewing Child Abuse Suspects

July 25, 2023 | 8:00am – 5:00pm | at the Southwest Family Advocacy Center

Course Description: This training focuses on the legal issues and techniques of interviewing adults suspected of committing child abuse, and is designed to improve the investigation and prosecution of child abuse cases by teaching investigators interview techniques that gather the greatest amount of reliable information. Some information regarding interviewing juveniles suspected of child abuse is also included.

Who Should Attend: This training is exclusively designed for professionals with duties that include interviewing suspected victims of child maltreatment, such as law enforcement, DCS professionals, professionals with the Office of Child Welfare Investigations, and Prosecutors.

This course may be AZPOST eligible with agency approval
